A Message from Your Superintendent

June 22, 2018

Good morning. I have a quick update from last night’s School Board meeting. The Board voted to approve our recommendation to replace two chillers that provide air conditioning to most of the Lincoln Middle School building. The 28-year-old chillers began to fail during the last full week of school. Once it became apparent that the equipment could not be repaired, we consulted with our architects and engineers and obtained a handful of quotes for purchasing new chillers, replacing the control system and installing the new equipment. At last night’s meeting, we presented the Board with our recommendation of the companies and products we selected and a dollar amount not to exceed $175,000. The Board approved our recommendations. So we will order the chillers and work will begin immediately, with the goal of having everything in place and operable by the time school starts.

While it is unfortunate to have to undertake an emergency project like this, we’re thankful this purchase is something we anticipated and have planned for. We’ve been aware that the aging equipment at Lincoln would need to be replaced soon, and this has been at the top of the priority list in the Master Facilities Plan. In fact, it was one of the maintenance priorities outlined during the referendum Community Forums. A benefit of the new equipment is that it will have better energy efficiency than the chillers that have been in place for close to 30 years.

As we get closer to the first day of school, I will update you on the progress of this project, as well as other work taking place in the schools. The planned summer projects, such as replacing Fairview’s fire sprinkler system and replacing exterior doors, are progressing on schedule.

On another note, I’m so pleased to announce that District 57 has won a 2018 Golden Achievement Award in Recognition of Exemplary Public Relations. The award is from the National School Public Relations Association (NSPRA), in the category of Community Outreach and Public Engagement Initiatives. We were honored for "Educating and Engaging the District 57 Community in Preparation for the Tax Referendum Vote." According to NSPRA, District 57 is in “a select group of winners” and “a leader in school communication." I am proud of this significant recognition, and I congratulate everyone who played a role in our District receiving it!
